Student visa refusal: the reasons, the appeal within 30 days and what to change

A visa refusal can be challenged, but the deadline is short and many pages still give the old one. Here is how to read your refusal, file an appeal and prepare a new application.

Up to date as of 17 October 2026

A student visa refusal always states its reasons. You can file a recours gracieux (request for reconsideration) with the consul and an appeal to the Commission de recours contre les décisions de refus de visa (CRRV) in Nantes, within 30 days: this appeal is mandatory before going to the administrative court of Nantes. The "2 months" quoted in videos and on a Campus France Tunisia page are out of date.

You can also reapply with a corrected file. In both cases, start by identifying the weak document the refusal reason targets.

Three refusals not to confuse

With no answer from the consulate for 2 months, the refusal is implicit (Campus France Morocco).

The refusal reasons, as students receive them

In French-speaking Africa, refusals are referred to by a number (motif 2, motif 4, motif 5). The wording below is what students copied from their refusal, translated here; the numbering has not been checked against an official form to be confirmed.

MotifWording copied by students (translated)What it targets in practice
2You have not provided proof of sufficient funds to cover the costs of your stay, or you are not able to acquire them legally.Amount too low, guarantor too weak, origin of the funds not proven
3You have not proven your admission to a higher education institution.Enrolment missing, not confirmed, or a school that does not answer the consulate
4Insufficient evidence to be sure that the stay for study purposes is not abusive, or serious reasons to believe you will stay for other purposes.Incoherent plan, going back a level without a reason, deadlines missed
5The information provided to justify the purpose and conditions of the stay is incomplete or not reliable. The most frequent: weak finances or housing, documents that contradict each other
1, 6, 7False or falsified document; a ban from French territory; a threat to public order.Rare

The French Ministry of the Interior lists as general reasons for visa refusal: the risk of an irregular stay for lack of ties with the home country, the authenticity of documents, funds, the purpose and conditions of the stay, and insurance. False supporting documents account for 96% of refusals for fraud.

Filing an appeal: deadline, address, content

  • Deadline: 30 days from notification of the refusal, before the CRRV (Service-Public.fr, checked on 9 October 2026). The recours gracieux to the consul can be filed at the same time.
  • CRRV address given by Campus France Tunisia: BP 83609, 44036 Nantes Cedex 01.
  • Content: a copy of the refusal, your contact details and your application number, then a point-by-point answer to the reason, with the documents that prove it. For motif 4, show the coherence between your background, the programme and the job you are aiming for; for motif 2 or motif 5, bring the proof that was missing (regular income, origin of the funds, real accommodation).
  • Next: if the CRRV rejects the appeal, you can take the case to the administrative court of Nantes.

No official success rate for appeals is published.

Appeal or new application

Most students reapply rather than appeal, for fear of delays as the start of the academic year approaches. The two are not exclusive. A new application only makes sense if you change the document the reason targets: students describe a visa obtained six weeks after a motif 5 refusal by changing guarantor, others the same reason three times in a row by changing only the accommodation.

In Tunisia, a new application for the same plan goes back through Campus France for a new TLScontact appointment (100 TND), without a new interview.

What refused students find when they reread their file

  • Texts that contradict each other: Études en France motivations, a "statement of purpose" and a visa letter that do not give the same plan, or never mention going home.
  • A cover letter missing from the visa file, or too weak.
  • Funds badly presented: a loan granted with no statement of the payment, three payslips and an unsigned letter, a large sum deposited just before.
  • A guarantor with no proven relationship or with income too low for the amount promised.
  • Accommodation far from the city of study, or a refundable booking that was cancelled.
  • A plan that goes back a level (a first-year Master’s after a second-year Master’s) without explanation.
  • An easy Campus France interview, and a visa refused anyway: the interview does not protect you from a weak visa file.

What you must never do

A bank loan letter obtained "just for show", an account inflated for the time of the visa, an edited document: these are document fraud. In Morocco, proven fraud can lead to lifelong exclusion from French public higher education and 5 years without a Schengen visa; in Senegal, 5 years of ineligibility. A document with crossed-out text must be reissued by the institution that issued it, never corrected yourself.

Questions from refused candidates

I just got a motif 5 refusal. What should I do?

Read the reason, identify the weak document (often the finances or the accommodation, or documents that contradict each other), then choose: recours gracieux and appeal to the CRRV within 30 days, or a corrected new application, or both.

Is the appeal deadline 2 months?

No, for a visa refusal it is 30 days before the CRRV (Service-Public.fr, checked on 9 October 2026). The 2 months quoted in videos and by Campus France Tunisia are out of date. For an admission refusal, the deadline is the one stated in the institution’s letter.

Should I attach the refusal letter when I reapply?

There is no official instruction on the pages we read. What counts is correcting the document the refusal targeted and keeping your texts consistent.

Does an appeal against a motif 4 have a chance?

No success rate is published. The appeal must show the coherence between your background, the programme and your career plan; it is mandatory before going to the administrative court of Nantes.

The university refused me. Can I appeal?

Some institutions’ letters open an appeal within 2 months; others state that the committee will not reconsider its decision. Read your letter.

How do I know if my avis Campus France was unfavourable?

You cannot know: the opinion is not shared. It is advisory; the institutions and the consulate decide.
